In this handy guide, we’ll explore everything you need to know about upgrading the sound system in your VW camper.

You might spend a lot of time in your campervan, or you might just take it out for the occasional getaway. Either way, a good sound system is a great way to improve your experience – whether you’re cruising down the motorway blasting your favourite tunes or relaxing in the middle of nowhere with your feet up.

Let's dive in!

Input

First things first – the head unit. This is essentially the control centre for all things audio, managing everything from radio to streaming. Swapping out the original unit for something more modern is one of the easiest ways to get better sound and more functionality.

Modern head units typically come with loads of great features like Bluetooth, USB ports, DAB radio, and even Apple Car Play or Android Auto – so you can connect your phone and play music, use maps, or take calls seamlessly.

Which one you choose really depends on what matters most to you. If you’re an avid radio listener, try looking for a model with DAB+ radio for more stations and reliable sound. Prefer streaming from your phone? A unit with Apple Car Play or Android Auto is your new best friend.

There are loads of options to choose from, with different styles, sizes, and features, so take your time and find one that you’re happy with. Just make sure it fits in your dashboard and is compatible with your camper before buying.

Tip: Take a look through the reviews before you buy – it’s a great way to gauge real-world performance and usability before spending your money.

Wiring

You might not see them, but your camper’s wires play a big part in how good your audio sounds. If they’re old, worn, or just not up to the job, you can replace them with fresh cables which can make a surprising difference. If you’re connecting amps, be sure to use fused cables to ensure safety.

While you’re there, it’s worth considering soundproofing. Products like Dynamat can be fitted to your panels and doors to block out road noise. Not only does this make your music sound clearer inside the campervan, but it can also reduce the noise that escapes to others around you.

Amps

Adding an amplifier is a great way to level up your sound. Even good speakers won’t achieve their full potential without a little extra power behind them.

There are a few different types of amps to choose from, which depends on your setup. If you’re only powering front speakers, a 2-channel amp will be just fine. For front and rear speakers, it’s best to go for a 4-channel amp.

If you’re wanting more bass, a monoblock amp is perfect for running a subwoofer.

As a general guide, look for an amp that delivers roughly 75 watts RMS per channel, and make sure it matches your speakers’ RMS rating (the continuous power rating, not the peak one).

Upgrading your speakers is another great way to achieve better sound quality.

If you’re thinking of swapping out your stock speakers for some new replacements, it’s a good idea to look for reputable brands to guarantee a good purchase. Don’t forget to make sure the new speakers fit your VW, too.

For some extra bass, you could add a subwoofer to your system. These are also available in compact models, so you can fit them under a seat or behind a cabinet so you’re not losing valuable storage space.

Batteries

If you’re planning to use your sound system while parked up, it’s a good idea to use a secondary battery – more commonly known as a leisure battery. This will allow you to keep your music playing without draining your main starter battery, so you won’t have any unwanted surprises when you’re ready to set off again.

If you do opt for a leisure battery, fitting a battery monitor can also be very useful so you can keep an eye on your power levels and track your usage.

Final thoughts on enhancing your camper audio

Upgrading the sound system in your VW camper can significantly improve your audio experience, whether you’re parked up or cruising on the road. There are loads of ways to improve your setup, from replacing the head unit and speakers to adding a subwoofer.

Think about what upgrades make the most sense for you, and be sure to check that any new components are compatible with your vehicle before you buy.

Whether you’re tuning into a podcast or relaxing with your favourite tunes, having a quality sound setup can make all the difference.
