Here's a step-by-step guide to get you started.

How to Replace Your CV Boots (VW T5 & T5.1)

Before You Start: Parts differ for inner vs outer, manual vs DSG, and FWD vs 4Motion. Always check your van’s details before ordering.
You’ll need: CV boot kit (Inner or Outer), socket set, hub nut socket, torque wrench, CV clamp tool, jack/stands, and brake cleaner.

Step 1 — Preparation
• Loosen wheel bolts and, if changing an outer boot, loosen the hub nut while the van is on the ground.
• Jack up the van, secure it on axle stands, and remove the wheel.
• Unplug the ABS sensor and secure brake hoses if they’re in the way.
• Disconnect Suspension: To access the CV joint, you will need to disconnect some suspension components, such as the ball joint.
• Remove the Drive Shaft: Remove the hub section, then remove the six bolts connecting the drive shaft to the gearbox to remove the drive shaft.

Step 2 — Remove Old Boot
• Cut the old boot clamps with side cutters and slide the boot off.
• Clean the CV joint thoroughly with brake cleaner.
• Inspect the joint—if it clicks on turns, feels rough, or has visible wear, replace the CV joint instead of just the boot.

Step 3 — Fit New Boot
• Pack the joint with the correct grease supplied in the kit (don’t mix with old grease).
• Slide the new boot over the shaft and seat both ends properly.
• Outer boot: fits over the CV joint near the hub.
• Inner boot: fits at the gearbox flange.
• Fit new clamps and crimp securely with the proper tool.

Step 4 — Reassemble
• Reinsert the drive shaft, reattach the suspension components, and tighten the nuts.
• Tighten all bolts and nuts to VW torque specs (especially the hub nut). Torque the hub nut to 200 Newton-meters (or the manufacturer's specification).
• Refit the wheel and torque wheel bolts correctly.

Step 5 — Final Checks
• Spin the wheel by hand and check the boot isn’t twisted.
• Top up gearbox oil if the inner flange was removed.
• Road test the van with a few tight turns, listen for clicking or vibration.
• Re-check clamps and make sure no grease is escaping.
