1969 Volkswagen Type 2 RHD Dormobile Camper — £10, 995
We are selling our 1969 Volkswagen Type 2 Dormobile camper after deciding to move on to a split screen.
This is a complete, running camper with a particularly good professionally fitted interior and a substantial amount of recent mechanical work. It is not a concours example, giving the next owner the opportunity to continue improving a very usable and characterful early Bay.
We have recently spent approximately £6, 600 improving the braking, steering, suspension and general safety of the vehicle, making it a much stronger vehicle for the next owner.
Recent mechanical and safety work
- New front disc-brake conversion
- Brand-new rear brake drums
- New brake lines throughout
- New steering ball joints throughout
- New clutch
- New shock absorbers
- New throttle linkage
- New tyres
- Professional laser wheel alignment
Invoices and photographs of the recent work are available.
A considerable amount of work has therefore already been completed to the principal mechanical and safety-related components, including the brakes, steering, suspension, clutch and tyres.
Engine and gearbox
- 1641cc twin-port air-cooled engine
- Engine fitted new in 2005
- Approximately 108, 000 miles since installation
- Desirable 1800 gearbox, giving more relaxed cruising than the original early-Bay gearing
The engine runs strongly and is fitted with an SVDA distributor. There is a small oil leak around the rear main-seal area, which is not uncommon on these engines.
Professionally fitted camper interior
The interior is one of the highlights of the vehicle. It was professionally fitted while the van was owned by a cabinetmaker and is both attractive and practical.
Features include:
- Full-width rock-and-roll double bed
- Dormobile pop-top roof
- Two original Dormobile fold-out cot beds
- Propex LPG heating system
- Two-ring gas hob
- Sink and tap with running-water system
- Custom-made toilet setup
- Leisure battery
- Split-charge relay
- Interior lighting system
- USB charging points
- Battery voltage meter
- Curtains throughout
- Upholstered interior panels, including the sliding door
- Front-mounted spare wheel
- Colour-matched spare-wheel cover
- Awning fabric matched to the pop-top
With the full-width bed and two original Dormobile cots, the camper can sleep up to four — realistically two adults and two children.
Condition
This is a genuine, unrestored 1969 camper rather than a freshly restored or concours vehicle, and it is being sold accordingly.
Importantly, it is complete, running and driving, and the recent braking, steering, clutch, suspension and tyre work means a substantial amount of the immediate mechanical work has already been completed.
It would suit somebody looking for a characterful early Bay that can be enjoyed and improved over time, particularly one with a genuinely good Dormobile interior already in place.
Viewings and inspections are very welcome, and we have photographs and invoices available for the recent work completed.
£10, 995, with sensible offers considered after viewing.
