This 11-window split screen has been part of our family since 2008 when we imported it into the UK. It’s seen many adventures whilst in our ownership but now it’s time for it to move on to a new home and create lasting memories for a new family.
During our ownership we had a new Dormobile roof fitted to replace the original turret top. This gives plenty of light through its windows. It also allows you to stand up in the van. We also fitted original Dormobile bunks so the van can sleep 4 people - two adults and two kids. The bunks fold into the side of the van so you can still stand up in there during the day.
We managed to source a modern copy of the Dormobile curved rack giving plenty of extra storage up on the roof, great for bulky items such as an awning, BBQs and chairs.
The oak ply interior is our take on cabinets from Devon and Canterbury Pit conversions. Seat bases are based on a Devon conversion. The seat tops lift up to give loads of storage space. They also convert into a full-length double bed. There is a table which slides away into the back of the van when not in use – it’s also used to make up the bed base.
The gas cooker is housed on the door so you can use it inside or out. It’s based on a Canterbury Pit design, folding up when not in use so that it doesn’t infringe on interior space.
The front seats are beige leather Saab seats. Bromsgrove Auto Trimmers matched the colour for us to make the rear bench seat cushions. These are vinyl so nice and easy to keep clean. Seat belts are fitted front and rear.
The van was painted in the USA prior to our ownership. It’s in reasonable condition but bears the marks of time and has some marks. The van has been kept in a dry garage since its arrival in the UK from California and this has kept it rust free. The underside of the van has been repainted to protect it from the British weather.
The original 1600 engine has been replaced by a Subaru EJ20 engine providing a welcome power boost – perfect for a van full of adults, kids and camping equipment! The original gearbox has been replaced with a Rancho freeway flyer box. The Bus Boys swing axel conversion that came with the bus was retained.
The braking system has been upgraded with a servo, Airkewld vented disk conversion utilising Wilwood 4 callipers and upgraded rear drums.
Wheels are chrome plated steel wheels; tyres are all good.
A modern towbar is fitted. Currently there is no rear bumper fitted but we do have a new bumper and brackets which will be supplied with the van. Should you be looking for a trailer for the camper we also have a SARIS steel trailer available that we used to tow with the camper, but it is not currently in a roadworthy condition.
The van could be easily converted back to an air-cooled engine should you wish to do so.
