I’m very reluctantly selling my 1978 VW Type 2 Westfalia Bay camper, after owning it for almost 20 years, due to a change in circumstances.
My van has been well loved and maintained over the years, with regular servicing and maintenance, with a new engine fitted in 2011 and major bodywork refurbishment in 2021.
The van runs well.
MOT – carried out and passed May 2026.
Engine / mechanicals/ bodywork
Engine:
New 1600 cc twin port engine based on new genuine case with German crank (OE) new bearings, Mahle barrels and pistons and Euromax heads (built by the well regarded Laurie Pettitt – Engines ) fitted in in 2011.
Gearbox:
Refurbished gearbox fitted in 2011.
Mileage – 77,500 km
Low mileage since owning (approx. 35,000)
Bodywork:
I had the bodywork completely overhauled in 2021, due to rust issues. The van was stripped back, affected areas were replaced and the van was resprayed. The bodywork has remained very good since, although there are a few spots of rust starting to appear, but nothing significant.
Chassis and underside are in good condition.

Interior
The interior is mainly original (reupholstered back seats/bed), and is rather worn, but still very functional. Door panels were replaced in 2021.
The van has a sink unit, with twin hob gas cooker, plus built in cupboards.
The van sleeps 4. Rock and roll bed below, recovered. Original bed up the top that slides out.
Pop top – canvas was replaced just before I bought the van in 2007 and is showing it’s age.
