1958 VW Split Screen Camper Van. German Built. Left Hand Drive. Rare early bus with an amazing specification
Overview
It is very rare that we get the opportunity to offer a pre 1960 split screen on the market. They are highly desirable with the ‘pure’ early shape and features including a smaller rear tailgate, circular rear taillights, ice pick door handles, full width front bench seat (seats 3) and the iconic original ribbed bumpers, which alone are worth a fortune and are lucky to have stayed with the bus all these years. This early shape is considered sought after amongst enthusiasts and is likely to attract a lot of interest / attention, particularly at VW shows.
We sold this bus to the previous owners 13 years ago in 2013 and they have cherished it ever since. They sadly had to sell the bus to raise funds for their daughter’s health condition otherwise their intentions would have been to keep it indefinitely.
Exterior
Exterior components in good condition for their age including the original steel wheels that have been fully refurbished and fitted with new polished stainless large VW logo hub caps.
The bus has always been garaged and looked after and underwent a sympathetic restoration prior to its last sale. The colour scheme of Lavender Blue / Lotus White is unique and stays true to the delicate pastel shades of this era, of which everyone adores! The restoration was a full shell repaint inside and out including the colour coded dashboard, indicative of a top quality job at the time.

Iconic front safari pop out windows and furthermore all six of the side windows are opening windows with the original early spoon window catches, which again are rare and sought after parts.
Mechanical
1600cc reconditioned engine starts and runs on the button with a meticulously detailed engine bay carried out in April 2026 with engine removal for a full service on the bench.
Early buses did not have a fuel gauge, but this one has been equipped with a retrofitted gauge and sender offering some reassurance to the driver.
The bus has also been equipped with a Power Assisted Steering upgrade that functions utilising an electric motor designed by a company called Lite-Steer. These are an incredible piece of kit that we regularly fit on customer and sales vehicles which make an enormous difference especially when parking in tight spaces that can literally be done with one or two fingers.
Interior
The bus has had a high-end bespoke interior built that includes the following specification.
• Bespoke rear facing cabinet in oak veneer with neatly curved edges. This has a central rear facing seat and two high top sections either side, one of which is a cupboard and the other houses a 12v fridge. There are gas elevated flip up sections above these either side revealing a sink / electric tap on one side and a double gas burner on the other. There is also storage space below the central seat as well as a clever hinged flip up central section in this area that creates a full width flush worktop for additional preparation space. This cabinet has been carefully designed for practicality.
• 12v leisure battery with a split charge relay system so that both batteries remain charged whilst the vehicle is being driven.
• 240v Mains hookup and internal 13a UK plug sockets for campsites.
• Full width rock n’ roll bed that acts as a 3-person rear facing seat and folds down to make a large double bed. Matching oak veneered bed skirting board.
• Full curtain track set throughout and custom chequered blue / beige curtains and tie backs.
• Upholstery throughout in oatmeal vinyl with perforated fluted main section to front bench seat.
• Matching table in oak veneer designed on a pedestal so that it can be removed when not in use to save space.
• Retrofitted seat belts for safety.
• Security Immobiliser.
