VW Volkswagen Transporter T4 Westfalia California Coach 2.5 TDI 1999

£16,000 ONO

Listed 20/03/2026

Increasingly rare and sought after Westfalia conversion T4 2.5 TDI with extensive service history and brand new MOT. Only 118,000 miles (190,000 kms). Van has consistently done around 4,000 miles per year - consistent with leisure use. Factory fitted 5 speed gear box and cruise control. Long nose short wheel base model. 4-berth (double bed below, double bed in roof).

See the info at the following link for info & images of the model from new (you don't get these sites for a 'standard' VW camper - https://westfaliat4.info/html/1995_vw_westfalia_t4_californi.html

Van drives incredibly well for age and benefits from power steering, 5 gears and cruise control. Once you get used to it being a left hand drive, it's very easy to drive - plenty of power for getting up hills and can sit happily at 70mph on the motorway. Personally, I sit at 60mph as we're not in a rush when we're in the van but it's capable of more if needed.

This was the only official, factory fit T4 van and was only available in Europe, hence the LHD. UK T4 campers are base vans bought by UK based conversion companies, i.e. Autosleeper. The Westfalia company is renowned for the quality of it's camper van installations and had partnered with VW for years.

The Westfalia is the only example of an official camper conversion with 4 factory fitted seat belts, correctly anchored into the chassis. This was the main reason for us buying it rather than a T25 or UK conversion - the kids are safe in the back. This is not a "honest I bolted it in really tight" rock'n'roll bed/DIY conversion. Being the official VW conversion in Europe, the Westfalia benefits from a different setup from factory, including additional noise dampening around the engine. The Westfalia conversion also includes rails for the pull out bed which allows it to be brought forward in the van to increase the rear load space or taken out altogether to you can use it as a van if needed. You also know that this van has not had a previous life as a builders van or similar!

Interior is 'kaktus' print which goes across the worktop as well - we love the print, one of the main reasons we bought it!

Has all the expected camper van features of an official conversion:
Pop top roof with double bed, 3/4 width pull out bed, gas 2 hob cooker, factory fitted Electrolux compressor fridge and roof mounted leisure, new leisure battery (ES1600 Exide G140 Marine Gel Leisure Battery 140Ah - £280) with split charge system (charges both whilst driving and via 240v hook up when camping), water tank, sink with electric shower tap and grey waste tank, Propex HS2000 blown air gas heating, integrated lighting, 2 x captain swivel chairs, 'caravan style' side window, matching pull out table, generous cupboard and wardrobe space.

Van has a modern Sony stereo with DAB & professionally fitted (PF Jones) tow bar with 13 pin electrics (used for a carry case, not to tow anything with - cost £550).

Serviced at least annually at a T4 specialist under my ownership and bar a small period when the van was imported, there is service history back to new registration in Germany. Recent work includes a full service at a renowned specialist (start of March), timing belt, ball joints, new starter batter and new leisure battery.

Sale at asking price will include over £1,500 worth of extras:

  • Olpro inflatable drive away awning (£750)
  • Hook up cable (£50)
  • Gas bottles for both heating and cooker (£200)
  • Thermal screen for pop top (keeps it warm in the winter) (£200)
  • Steering wheel lock (£55)
  • Protective matt for cab carpet (£75)
  • Fiamma Levelling Ramps (£70)
  • Fiamma 4 x Bike Rack (£400)

I also have the original alloy wheels. We didn't like the look of them so swapped them out for some steel wheels, which we felt suited the van more, but you can put the original ones back if you prefer.

Adrian Flux agreed valuation of £20k has been in place whilst I have owned the vehicle.

There are of course a few age related marks (it is nearly 30 years old) but the van is structurally and mechanically sound and has never let me down.

Selling as the kids are now too old to happily sleep in the roof like they used to but aren't old enough yet so that we can use it without them! The van just isn't getting used enough so it's time for it to have some new adventures. We've been all round England, Scotland and Ireland in it and loved every minute of it - I'm sure you will too!

Any questions, just give me a shout. Happy for you to come and test drive the van but you'll need to get insurance, otherwise I'll happily drive you around in it - we've got motorways, hills etc nearby so you'll be able to see it's good. Van is located in Glossop, just to the east of Manchester at the edge of the Peak District. Easily reachable by train if needed.
