After many years of owning this van, we have reluctantly decided to sell our VW Westfalia California campervan. We are replacing it because we need to help our children with moving to and from University and with aging parents, we need something more practical. We have had many years travelling around the UK and Europe, and have been to many festivals in this van. We are all very sad to see it go.
Made in 1997, this original Westfalia California Coach is the last year of van conversion by Westfalia, before VW took over, and is therefore the last year of the European entertaining fabrics - This one has the fabulous cactus fabric and laminate work tops. The van also has custom tinted rear windows, which closely match the bodywork, and look amazing!
It was imported to the UK in 2010 and we have a full service record. The engine is a 2.5 TDi and the van is fitted with a Toad alarm, central locking and immobiliser. 5-spoke Alloy wheels. The van had a new MOT so has 12 months left (to 27 February 2027).
In the previous MOT, there were some advisories, the main one being the steering rack, which is noted as having slight free play. Also noted was the brake hoses, which we've had replaced. Additionally, some welding was noted, on the cills. Since putting the van on the market at the end of last year, we have spent over £1,500 on the Van. £1,050 of this to replace the more significant rust on cills and front underbody, which have now been stoneguard underneath and resprayed back to the original colour. Cosmetically, there are a still few of areas rust, but these are cosmetic. We have tried to show all of this as clearly as possible in the photographs.
We've added a video in which you can see and hear the immobiliser being unlocked, the vehicle starting and ticking over plus the doors auto locking once the engine has started.
Inside the cab area, the van has power steering and the van is a 5-speed manual gearbox and has cruise control for those long European journeys. We have fitted a Sony Stereo, which has Bluetooth and USB connections for inputting audio and you can make phone calls via bluetooth. We have also fitted Blaupunkt speakers in the rear. Above the windscreen is the control panel for battery, fridge and heater. There is a factory loose laid carpet to minimise wear on the main fitted carpet.
The van Sleeps 4 in two double beds, and comes with the standard features of canvas pop top with gas strut opening and support - again, as this is a 28 year old van, there are some signs of wear with repairs but this is all in working order - see photos. The front two front seats are captains seats so swivel and come with arm rests. The rear seat slides forward for using with a dining table and is a Rock and Roll bed with headrests and underneath the bed is a large capacity storage area and a this is where the table is stowed. The car jack is also bolted into here. The rear seats can also be removed if required. There is a very large wardrobe with plenty of storage, plus cupboards accessible above the bed and from the rear. The van has matching curtains throughout, two fitted fluorescent lights plus two reading lights, one in the pop-top and one in the rear.
The kitchen area comprises the usual twin gas hob, sink with drainer and 3-way top loading fridge. Both the hobs and the fridge are fed by a Campingaz 907 bottle, sink with fresh water tank and waste tank. Gas isolation valves and the waste water release lever is inside one of the cupboards. The gas cooker can be removed from the kitchen unit and moved outside the van if you prefer al fresco.
