1973 VW Type 2 Bay Window Camper - 27,000 miles since new

VW Type 2 Devon Campervan, year 1973, in excellent original condition. Less than 27,000 miles since new, fully documented history file including original bill of sale, all MOT certificates and service records. Owned by us for 24 years. Engine 1600cc, standard. Sleeps 2+2. Immaculate inside and out, always garaged. Manual. MOT'd to May 2026. Located in Suffolk.
We are the 4th owner, we purchased from a VW enthusiast in 2001 who acquired the van from the original family owners earlier that same year.
The van is in largely original condition having never required restoration. Never welded, undersealed when new and again in 2002, the orange paint was renewed in 2009 to replace the original orange paint which was getting faded with only a few minor stone chips to repair. The white paint is original. The bodywork remains in pristine, showroom condition.
The interior is in excellent original, time-warp condition. Original floor covering, seat covers, curtains, dash, door cards, headlining and rubber mats all excellent. Benefits from a 2-hob stove, cooler box and sink, all original as supplied when new. The upper bunk beds rarely used, the pop-top functions well. MW/LW radio, fitted in 1978, is in good working order.
Mechanically, the van is in excellent original condition, having been regularly serviced throughout its life. Recent repairs include a new brake master cylinder. The van has never let us down, we purchased the van in 2001when the mileage was about 19,000. The van has been used regularly during our ownership and always cherished. The tyres are matching Goodyear 3-ply van tyres which remain in good condition. MOT in May 2024 showed no advisories. Underneath, the floor pans, wheel arches, sills and chassis are all excellent too.
The history file is 100% complete with the original bill of sale, all MOT certificates and every invoice detailing any service or repair work carried out. Early VW Computer Diagnosis Printouts, original VW Vehicle and Caravette Instruction Manuals, VW supplying dealer stamped service booklet until 1987 (17,800 miles), thereafter serviced by an Austin Rover dealer in the years up to 1999. The van was only used minimally for several years in the 1990s but always MOT’d and periodically serviced.
Modifications include front inertia seatbelts (original belts retained and can be re-fitted if preferred), 2 lap-belts on rear seat, oil pressure/temperature gauge, leisure battery with 2 in-car electric sockets.
