A rust free UK specification T2 camper which has been restored as close as possible to original condition.
I have owned this camper for 22 years and have had some fantastic times with it but I am just not using it enough now, so sadly it is time to sell.
I spent 7 years restoring it, and the work included replacement of many panels. These included: All 4 wheel arches (the correct - and expensive - 'crossover' type on the front), inner and outer sills, cab doors (one brand new, one rust free from the US), new tailgate, jacking points, outriggers where needed, front seat belt mounts and rear corners below the tail lights.
It has new doors handles and tailgate lock, genuine VW headlight surrounds, new tail lights and front indicator lenses, and window rubbers all round.
The van was sprayed in the original Pastel White over Niagara Blue, a colour only offered on the T2 for a short time. The wheels have been media blasted and painted the correct silver.
On completion of the restoration the van was thoroughly rust proofed using a high pressure lance to get into all the box sections.
Mechanically it has had a full engine overhaul which included new barrels, pistons, cylinder heads and of course all bearings.
It has a brand new German made carburetor, new vacuum advance distributor, fuel pump and has been fitted with an alternator - one of the few deviations from the standard specification.
The brakes have new calipers, discs, pads and at the rear new wheel cylinders and shoes.
The front shock absorbers were also replaced during the restoration.
The vehicle left the factory in April 1972 in microbus specification, and was converted to a camper by Devon Conversions, being ready for collection by the first owner in July of that year. Sadly, the original interior had long gone by the time I bought the van in 2003, but I subsequently tracked down a Devon Moonraker interior that is correct for a 1972 camper. This I had restored by an antique furniture restorer who did a fantastic job repairing the oak veneer on the wooden fittings.
All the foam cushions and covers are new, as are the curtains. The curtains have blackout linings.
The pop top was restored several years ago and is watertight, so I just cleaned this up, but did fit new springs to make sure it stays up without sagging.
All the door cards were replaced, and I used vinyl dye to get them to the correct shade for what would have been fitted to a Niagara blue T2. Luckily there was enough of the original vinyl left to allow an accurate match to be mixed.
The seats in the cab were in poor condition and were never very comfortable, so I did deviate here from my aim to get the van as close to original as possible, and have fitted seats from a Saab 9000.
The van has completed less than 800 miles since the restoration. As I said, I do not use it enough.
I did give the van a service about 250 miles ago in August last year as it had been a year since the restoration work was completed.
I have a box folder full of receipts for parts covering thousands of pounds and going back to the 1990's, the ones shown in the photo are just a selection of them.
The van drives beautifully, and performs as a T2 should in every aspect. This van is in superb condition. If you want a T2 which has been modified or has modern updates then it is probably not for you, but if you want a genuine 1970's camping experience and do not want to worry about the usual rust issues then this will tick all the boxes.
