VW T2 Bay Window Camper Van 1979

Selling our lovely campervan Rosie after finally upgrading (after 15 wonderful years). This is a rather special bus. Purchased in 2009 after undergoing a full restoration, Rosie has had numerous improvements over the years and is an excellent camper, festival bus and long distance cruiser. Tax exempt, MOT exempt but to provide confidence Rosie has just passed her MOT with no advisories.

The biggest improvement over the stock T2 is the replacement of the venerable VW engine with the much more modern Subaru EJ22 2.2l engine. The same size and weight as the original, this is a water-cooled, fuel injected powerplant that is not only more powerful but also more efficient, returning around 30 mpg at cruising speed (65mph) and capable of well in excess of 70mph, even uphill. The suspension and brakes are upgraded to suit, with disc brakes at the front. A large twin-fan radiator sits under the centre of the camper and an oil cooler is fitted.

To suit the engine Rosie has a rebuilt (2022) Volkswagen Freeway Flyer gearbox with higher final drive and competition clutch. This gearbox is easily strong enough for the engine and gives low engine revs at cruising speed.

The engine replacement was done in 2010 and has been an absolute joy, turning Rosie from an awkward driver into modern car like performance.

Equipped for comfortable camping with a full-size double rock’n’roll bed, a foot wider than the standard ¾ rock’n’roll for home-level comfort, elevating roof providing stand-up headroom, 2-burner gas hob and sink with pumped fresh water, and Dometic fridge capable of 240v, 12v and gas power. There is a 240v mains hookup, leisure battery and 600W inverter, The front passenger seat swivels to face backwards and a removable table provides comfortable dining. There is a Propex gas heater keeping the interior cosy even in the coldest weather.

Other improvements include heated front windscreen (as well as rear) and a decent heater with variable-speed fan courtesy of the water-cooled engine.

There is also an easily removable second row of seating with 2 seats with inertia-reel seatbelts. The rear seat has 2 inertia belts and a mid lap belt for 3 (smallish) people so Rosie can transport up to 7 in comfort.

Entertainment is provided by a 2-din 7” screen Android unit, with Google maps, bluetooth music capability, hands-free phone and FM/AM radio, feeding two front speakers and a rear-mounted Kenwood amplifier supplying two JVC rear speakers. Extra lighting and sockets (USB and 12v) run off the leisure battery. 13-amp sockets are powered by the 240V hookup through an RCD-protected fuse box. Both leisure and engine batteries are topped up by a solar panel on the roof through a split charge system.

The camper has a towbar fitted with 7-pin lighting socket (and enough power to tow things!).

Rosie is an iconic camper van, of the best vintage (late bay T2 VW’s are considered the classic combination of design and modern features) and Subaru-powered she is a dream to drive. Starts first time, fuel-efficient, reliable and with enough power for long distance touring.

We also offer for sale a spare set of wheels fitted with snow tyres as an optional extra (£300 the set). Rosie has carried 6 of us in comfort to the French Alps for skiing trips.
