1968 Westfalia Early Bay T2

“KC” is a stunning 1968 VW T2 Westfalia Early Bay. First registered on the 1st Jan 1968 in Oregon, USA, she is in fact a very early Bay indeed and features a number split-screen items such as the door handles and interior mirror. She was converted from new by Westfalia, and retains much of the original Campmobile interior. She was imported into the UK in 2010 and fully rebuilt/restored by a VW specialist, the paperwork is retained along with many photos of the restoration. A new 1600cc engine was fitted at that time and in the last 15 years KC has only averaged 1000 miles per year…so needless to say she is mechanically excellent, with no crankshaft endfloat. She’s currently showing an indicated 45k miles.

KC retains a stunning classic VW look, with superb beige/white paintwork set off with unmarked reproduction BRM Speedwell alloy wheels (with almost new Yokohama radials and the correct staggered hub caps), a brand new full set of 1968 door handles/locks (all on the one ignition key). She retains the original stock ride height, meaning she can access the more “rural” camp site with ease! Whilst not quite totally blemish free, the bodywork is in incredibly good condition indeed for a 56 year old vehicle, with ripple-free sides, superb shut lines and a deep shine to the paint. She is always garaged, is fully undersealed, and looks absolutely stunning.

The classic theme continues inside, with the LHD driver’s area remaining mainly stock, with the original steering wheel, re-covered seats/door cards and a period parcel shelf. Inertia reel seat belts have been fitted, along with a modern head unit, concealed 12V socket in the glove box, a servo brake system, and a classic, and very expensive, Gene Berg shifter which reduces throw by 40% (the original shifter is included in the sale). The ignition barrel/switch was recently replaced (a common weak spot on an older bus) and a JK cup holder which fits over the ashtray is included.

The accommodation is largely original, with a buddy seat, sink unit, ¾ rock and roll bed, plywood roof lining (with recessed LED lights) and front hinged pop-top. The original water tank has been replaced with a newer one, and the original cool box has been converted to storage. A fold out table is included, and there is a pattern ¾ width “headbanger” locker included which was never fitted (the clue’s in the name…). The interior shows some signs of wear/patina but suits the bus far better than a modern “rip and replace” conversion. One modern JK inertia reel seat belt has been fitted in the back, with an extender so it will fit an adult, or a child seat.

A number of items to get you camping are included, such as a modern drive-away awning, draught reducer, JK insulated window blinds, and a JK child’s hammock bed which fits above the front seats. KC has electric hook-up, a split charging system, and warm white LED string lights in the pop-top. A full cover is available by separate negotiation, however we’ve never used it as she has always been garaged. She also has a towbar and electrics for a small camping trailer or bike rack.

The original “wide 5” steel wheels, crossply tyres and reproduction domed hub caps are included for completeness. They could do with powder coating if you wanted to put them back on, however she does drive so much better on modern tyres. A number of other spares are included. There’s an entire folder of paperwork, the original Oregon title documentation, and a Haynes manual. However, this is very rarely used as KC has never let us down and starts every time. She is never driven on salty roads, she’s trickle charged in winter, and regularly moved. Due to her age, KC is tax free, MOT free, and cheap to insure as a classic vehicle.

If you are looking for a loud, tuned, slammed bus with an all-modern interior, KC is probably not for you. But if you are looking for a proper, useable classic VW Early Bay in absolutely superb condition KC could be the one. She would also be the perfect wedding car if you were looking to get into that business…we should know, she was our wedding car in 2023, and as such we will be very sorry to see her go. However a lack of use means it’s time for someone else to do what she is meant to do, and get out to the VW shows, go camping, and have some adventures in her.

KC is located in Whissendine, Rutland, UK. Serious enquiries only please, no silly offers or timewasters. Thanks for your interest!
