BCV164T, a ‘Silverfish’ is (reluctantly) for sale. Silverfish were a limited-edition batch of VW Late Bays (produced for the German market only), just before the presses were sent to Brazil. 1600 were made &, it is believed, only about 50 survive. She left the VW factory in Hannover (German spelling) on 17th Nov 1978. The Silver metallic paint is the original colour & is unique to the Silverfish – the only Late Bays ever painted in a metallic paint from original. The engine is a 2000cc Type 4 with new (2022) Solex twin carburettors.
The van was professionally restored 2010-11 from a rusty shell (photos of her original state available) & has a full width bed, sliding steel roof (original spec – just refurbished), Newton Commercial leather front seats (the passenger’s rotates), a 240v fridge, a single ring gas cooker, Noise Killer insulation throughout, Nespresso coffee machine, water filter, (underbelly) fresh water tank, illuminated compass, leisure battery, inverter, a safe, a second (hidden) ignition lock, oil temperature gauge, BlazeCut engine compartment automatic fire suppression & an Alpine stereo radio/CD system. The exhaust, bumpers, headlight surrounds, hub caps & spare wheel surround are all stainless steel. The clock is courtesy of the Pakistan Air Force. The engine was replaced in Autumn 2016 & the gearbox a year later. The odometer failed in late 2015, when it showed 274789 km. The new (Smiths’ electronic) one now shows approx. 7000 miles. MoT’d until Mar 2023 (‘though no MoT or road tax required as BCV164T is now over 40 years old).
