Description
We are looking at selling “Paddy”, our 1979 T2 Camper. It is a RHD Super Viking capable of seating 7 and sleeping 6. It is fully original other than a few upgrades and 40 years of care and maintenance. Our family of 5 have had the van for 7 great years, but it is time now to find a new home. Being over 40 years old, the van is now MOT & tax exempt, though we still get an MOT check to ensure that it’s road worthy during the service.
The van had a full bare metal respray in 2015, but all of the original features have been kept, which appears to be pretty rare as most Super Vikings seem to have had a makeover at some stage. It is one of the few vans available that has not been modernised and still has the original cloth and vinyl interior, which is in superb condition. We even have the original VAG log book from May 1979. It is stored in a garage all year and is regularly maintained and serviced. It has been rarely used in winter, and is thoroughly washed and cleaned each time.
The van has a 2.0 litre air-cooled unleaded engine. It is serviced regularly, and the carburettors cleaned and recalibrated annually. The engine runs smoothly and has never let us down since we have owned Paddy. It has a new battery and fan belt.
The mileage reads 23,536, but we wouldn’t be able to verify what this actually is. The van drives and handles extremely well. The suspension was upgraded before we bought Paddy and benefits from being slightly lowered, with Fuchs 5 spoke alloys all round. This makes the van much more stable and capable, though it’ll never be comparable to a modern van. The dash also benefits from a digital rev counter and oil temperature gauge – invaluable when driving over the summit of Bealach na Ba to Applecross!
The top of the van hinges along its length rather than from the front of back. This provides much more space up top than a conventional van which provides sleeping for 4 up top plus ample space for storage. When not in use, one of the beds hinges up which provides loads of standing space. The seating can be set up in either mini-bus style of 2 in the front, 3 in the middle and 2 in the rear or the middle row can slide forward and the back of the seats shifted to provide seating for 5 around a central table. There are inertia seat belts when the seating is in mini-bus mode.
Heating while driving is from the engine and while parked up a thermostat controlled Eberspacher diesel heater provides ample heat even on the coldest of nights.
The cooker is a 2-ring gas hob with grill. It can be used in-situ in the van or slides out the back and can be used outside on legs. Gas extension hoses are included in the sale to allow the cooker to be sited at the side or rear of the van. The gas cylinder is sited in the engine bay, which is significantly safer than the usual place under the seats inside.
There is plenty of storage under the seats. These supplement the 2 main storage compartments for pots, pans and food. There is also a storage cupboard under the working sink and 3 drawers for cutlery. The fridge works on both 12v and 240v when hooked up to mains power. The van also has a tow-bar which we have used for a storage box on longer trips.
For entertainment there is a drop down DVD/TV in the roof of the cab and a touch-screen radio that allows connection to any iPhone or Smartphone. There is a built-in extractor above the cooker that vents out the rear of the van.
A list of improvements includes: new hand-made fitted curtains all-round, new carpets in the front, new colour co-ordinated seat belts in the front, a bespoke storage box/cupholder between the front seats that can be removed and used as an outside table. This also stores an additional gel-acid battery that is charged from 2 solar panels on the roof and provides power to charge phones and 240v via a transformer for light duties. There is a built-in 240v socket in the van when hooked up to mains power if needed. There is also a voltmeter display that shows the main van battery charge. We have additional boards to allow the sleeping in the top of the van to provide either 4 single beds or 2 doubles.
We have a large folder with all the documents and receipts going back to the original purchase of the van. In addition we have 2 awnings included in the price which include a lightweight one that fixes to the gutter and a more substantial drive-away awning. There is also a Dubpod awning by negotiation if required
