Description

Selling my lovely van of 14 years ownership as my family of four now has outgrown it.

We know the van as Buttercup and it was professionally restored in 2008/9 with sills, arches, valance replaced where necessary and a full respray ( I have the paint codes), followed by a professional and original rewire and fitting ultimately of a new build 1600 Sport engine with twin 34ict Weber carbs, built from scratch by MAC VW. The interior was fitted by Bernard Newbury and is excellent condition, with leather heated seats up front, reversible vinyl/cloth seat cushions in the back on top of oak veneer cabinetry with loads of storage underneath accessed via lift up hatches under the seats and also via the quick access doors you can see in pictures.

Buttercup is a lovely van and very loved, very reliable - the new engine has done several thousand miles now and has never broken down on us and is very strong; keeps up with traffic and will pull you up any hills etc. There is a leisure battery and split charge unit in the engine bay, with cigarette style power in the seating area and also in the front. We use an inverter to provide 240v power for standard 3 pin accessories like a laptop charger etc. The bench seat up front offers three belted travelling seats: two period-style colour coded three-point belts and one lap-belt for the middle seat.

The camping interior consists of two facing bench seats and a fold away table between for dining etc. The table drops down to form the bed and very comfy for two. The inside is fully lined and a beautiful mohair-style headliner makes it very cozy and looks amazing, there are two period style lights in the headliner which look great too and give off a very nice warm light.

All the locks/handles etc were sent off for re-chroming and they all work as they should, all the doors line up and Buttercup is a very straight van, solid underneath. The chassis and box frame have professionally injected with Waxoyl by Rustmaster in Knutsford. There is a late bay front axle which means disk brakes on the front wheels.

After time, whilst Buttercup looks fantastic still, there are a few paint issues showing up now, the front has a crack and small hole, the rear passenger quarter has a crack (from a bump rather than any corrosion issues I should say) and there is a vertical crack on each side above the air intakes. All cosmetic stuff though and to be expected after 12 years since the respray. The only other niggle is reverse gear occasionally pops out and will need some attention at some point but again nothing immediate and very fixable.

So a very honest and rare right hand drive UK splitty, loads of history, receipts etc., any tests etc. are welcome as are near offers.
