Why find your VW’s Birthday?
Knowing your VW’s production date can be useful for several reasons:
• Historic Vehicle Tax Exemption: In the UK, cars over 40 years old qualify for free road tax and MOT exemption.
• Authentic Restoration: It helps you order the correct period parts, finishes, and accessories.
• Registration and Importing: DVLA may require proof of build date if registering an imported VW.
• Celebration: Many VW owners enjoy marking their vehicle’s “birthday” at club meets or on social media.
Check the VIN or Chassis Number
The starting point for dating your Volkswagen is its Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), sometimes called the chassis number on older, air-cooled models.
Once you have the number, you can compare it against Volkswagen’s official production charts to determine the build month and year. Volkswagen Classic Parts provides an online resource for this:
Volkswagen Classic Parts Production Data Sheets
These charts list VIN ranges for each model and year, helping you pinpoint when your VW left the production line.
(If your VIN doesn’t seem to fit, it may have been re-stamped or mis-recorded — double-check with your V5C and the body plate.)
Browse Chassis Numbers for the following VWs.
Chassis Numbers
VW VIN Locations
Beetle & Karmann Ghia VIN Location (Including Cabriolets)
On a metal plate in the spare wheel well area. Or stamped into the transmission tunnel under the backseats.

T2 Split Window VIN Location
Behind the passenger seat, mounted on the bulkhead or on the fresh air vent.

T2 Bay Window VIN Location
Behind the passenger seat or within the engine bay (T2 Bay Widow Campers)

Type 3 VIN Location (Notchback, Squareback, Fastback)
The pan number, which can be found under the rear seat at the centre of the transmission tunnel for all model years. Additionally, there should be a number located on the body... for the earlier models, this is typically found on a tag beneath the hood (at the front), while for the later models, it’s located on the dash pad.

T25 / T3 VIN Location
The VW T25 displays the chassis number in different locations to the other classic campers, such as on the VIN plate riveted to the A post, on the rear face of the offside front chassis outrigger or the chassis sticker above the pedals.

181 / Trekker VIN Location
Stamped into the transmission tunnel under the backseats. Located on the top of the front valance under the front bonnet.

T4 Transporter VIN Location
You can find the chassis number on your VW T4 in a few possible places, including the top of the dashboard on the offside (right), on the chassis frame behind the nearside (left) rear wheel, on the driver's footwell under the fuse box, or on the right column near the passenger seat.

T5 / T6 Transporter VIN Location
The VW T5 and T6 display their chassis number in the same locations, including on the right side of the engine compartment bulkhead and on the nearside (left) of the dashboard casing.

Apply for a Birth Certificate
For the most accurate information, you can order an official Volkswagen Birth Certificate (sometimes called a “Zertifikat”) directly from Volkswagen’s archives in Germany.
This document confirms:
• Exact build date
• Original colour and interior trim
• Engine and gearbox codes
• Factory of production
• Country of original delivery
You can apply through Volkswagen Classic Parts:

Processing times can vary, but it’s a brilliant keepsake that adds authenticity and value to your classic VW, especially for collectors or restorers.
Confirm age with the DVLA
If your VW has been imported or lacks UK registration, you’ll need to verify its build date when registering it with the DVLA. The Historic Volkswagen Club provides guidance on this process, and approved clubs (such as the VW Owners Club GB) can issue dating certificates accepted by the DVLA.
