What Does the Law Say About Classic Cars and MOTs?
In the UK, vehicles built or first registered more than 40 years ago are generally exempt from the annual MOT – as long as there haven’t been any “substantial changes” to the vehicle in the last 30 years. The term ‘substantial changes’ refers to modifications that change how the vehicle works, like replacing the chassis, axles, engine, or body.
If your classic has had any of these alterations within that time, it is still required to have an MOT every year. If you’re not sure whether your vehicle has had ‘substantial changes’, you can click here to read the full guidance on the government website.
MOT exemptions run from 1st January of each year, which means that these exemptions will roll on indefinitely and more classics will be exempt each year.
If your vehicle was built before… it will be MOT exempt from:
1st January 1985 1st January 2025
1st January 1986 1st January 2026
1st January 1987 1st January 2027
1st January 1988 1st January 2028
1st January 1989 1st January 2029
1st January 1990 1st January 2030
If your VW meets the exemption criteria, you don’t have to apply to stop getting an MOT – it will qualify automatically. However, it must still be in a roadworthy condition, and you could receive a fine or penalty points if your vehicle is found to be dangerous. That’s why many classic owners still choose to get a voluntary MOT each year. Find out more on the gov.uk website.

Which Classic VWs are Already MOT Exempt?
Loads of classic Volkswagens are already old enough to be MOT exempt. Here’s a quick list of VWs that qualify for exemption now:
- T2 Split Screens (1950–1967)
- Karmann Ghias (1955–1975)
- Type 3s (1961–1973)
- Type 34 Ghias (1961–1969)
- T2 Bay Windows (1967–1979)
- Trekkers (1968–1983)
Note: These exemptions only apply if your vehicle hasn’t had any major modifications in the last 30 years.
Rolling MOT Exemptions: What’s Coming Next?
Some VWs fall under rolling MOT exemptions, which means the older models are already exempt, while newer ones will qualify as they turn 40 years old in future years.
Here’s a quick list of some VWs on rolling MOT exemptions:
- Beetles (1946–2003) – Exempt from 2018 (for 1978 models) and will continue rolling through to 2043 (for 2003 models)
- T25s (1979–1992) – Exempt from 2019 through to 2032
- T4s (1990–2003) – Will become exempt between 2030 and 2043

Are Classic VWs Exempt from Road Tax?
Generally, yes! If your Volkswagen was built or first registered more than 40 years ago, it’s likely to be eligible for free vehicle tax – as long as it’s not being used for hire or business purposes.
Though unlike MOT exemptions, this isn’t automatic, so you will need to apply to stop paying road tax. Keep in mind that you will still need to tax your VW each year, even if you don’t have to pay the fee.
Example:
If your vehicle was built before… you can stop paying vehicle tax after
1st January 1985 1st April 2025
1st January 1986 1st April 2026
1st January 1987 1st April 2027
1st January 1988 1st April 2028
1st January 1989 1st April 2029
1st January 1990 1st April 2030.

Insuring a Classic VW
Classic VW Insurance is designed for vintage Volkswagens that are not generally used for everyday driving. These policies typically come with mileage limits and are usually cheaper than standard vehicle insurance, as insurers assume that classics are well-maintained and only driven occasionally, making them a lower risk.
Regardless of whether or not you're still paying for road tax or getting your classic VW MOT'd, you'll still need to ensure that it's properly protected by vehicle insurance.
Luckily, our colleagues at Just Kampers Insurance have been offering specialist vehicle insurance since 1998, and can get you a great deal on cover for your classic Volkswagen. Quick Summary
- Vehicles over 40 years old automatically qualify for MOT exemption, with more and more vehicles becoming exempt each year,
- Road tax exemption follows the same 40-year rule, but you’ll need to apply to update your VW’s tax status,
- If your VW has had substantial changes affecting the chassis, axle, engine, or body, it may still be required to pass an annual MOT,
- Insurance isn’t really affected by MOT or tax exemption, but your VW must still be safe and roadworthy.
Final Thoughts
Owning a classic VW is a real pleasure, and with MOT and tax exemptions, it can be even more rewarding. But, while MOTs are not mandatory for many classics, it’s still your responsibility to keep your vehicle safe, comply with regulations, and keep your insurer informed.
