About Just Kampers

Just Kampers has been supporting the VW community since 1989, supplying parts for standard, restored and modified classic Volkswagens.

Many of us at JK own, drive and work on air-cooled VWs ourselves, so we understand the importance of getting the right components for your Beetle. Our team is here to help with fitment and product advice if you’re unsure what’s currently fitted to your car.

VW Beetle Engine & Gearbox Mounting Parts

Our range covers standard replacement parts and performance drivetrain upgrades, including:

  • Gearbox mounts: Replacement front and rear mounts for compatible Beetle years and transmission setups.
  • Rubber mounts: Ideal for standard road cars where maintaining good isolation from drivetrain noise and vibration is important.
  • Urethane mounts: Firmer alternatives designed to reduce drivetrain movement on modified and performance Beetles.
  • Solid mounts: Heavy-duty options for more specialised performance applications.
  • Gearbox cradles & braces: Components designed to provide additional support and control of the engine and transmission.
  • Mounting hardware: Studs, bolts, nuts and other useful fittings for installation and repair.

How Do I Choose the Correct VW Beetle Mounts?

Mounting arrangements changed during Beetle production, while many cars have since had replacement engines, gearboxes or performance upgrades fitted.

Before ordering, check:

  • Model year: Mount designs differ across early and later Beetles, so check the stated product fitment carefully.
  • Gearbox setup: Identify the transmission and mounting arrangement currently fitted rather than relying on registration year alone.
  • Beetle model: Some components have specific model exclusions or fitment requirements.
  • Previous modifications: Replacement gearboxes, modified engines and existing performance mounts can affect which parts you need.
  • Road or performance use: Choose the mount type according to how you actually use the car.

Are Your VW Beetle Engine or Gearbox Mounts Worn?

Ageing rubber mounts can deteriorate and allow the engine and gearbox assembly to move more than intended. Signs worth investigating include:

  • Excessive drivetrain movement: Noticeable movement when accelerating, changing gear or lifting off the throttle.
  • Knocking or clunking: Worn mounts can allow drivetrain components to move under load.
  • Increased vibration: Damaged or incorrectly fitted mounts may transmit unwanted vibration through the car.
  • Poor gear selection: Excessive gearbox movement can contribute to inconsistent shifting, although linkage and gearbox condition should also be checked.
  • Visible deterioration: Cracked, perished or separated rubber is a good reason to replace the affected mount.

Rubber, Urethane or Solid Mounts?

The stiffest option isn’t necessarily the best choice for every Beetle:

  • Standard rubber: Usually the best choice for stock restorations, daily drivers and road cars where comfort matters.
  • Urethane: Reduces drivetrain movement compared with softer rubber and can suit modified or performance-oriented cars.
  • Solid mounts: Provide much less movement but can transmit considerably more noise and vibration into the vehicle.
  • Additional bracing: Engine and gearbox braces can provide extra support on higher-powered cars where drivetrain movement needs tighter control.

Note: Think about how you use your Beetle before upgrading. A solid or very stiff mounting setup designed for performance use can make a road car noticeably harsher to drive.

What Else Should You Check?

If you’re already working around the engine and gearbox mounts, it’s a good opportunity to inspect related components:

  • Clutch: Check clutch operation and associated components if the engine is being removed. Browse our VW Beetle Clutch Components.
  • Gear linkage: Worn bushes and linkage components can contribute to vague or difficult gear selection.
  • Gearbox & CV joints: Check for leaks, damaged boots, unwanted play or other signs of wear.
  • Mounting hardware: Replace damaged, badly corroded or unsuitable studs, nuts and bolts before reassembly.
