Choosing the Correct Engine & Gearbox Mounts

Mount design changed during Beetle production, so always check the actual vehicle and transmission setup before ordering:

Model year: Front and rear gearbox mounts vary according to production year, with different designs used across early and later Beetles.
Beetle model: Some mounting components have specific exclusions – for example, certain gearbox cradles aren’t suitable for 1303 models.
Previous modifications: Gearboxes, engines and mounting systems may have been changed during the car’s life, so check what’s actually fitted rather than relying solely on registration year.
Rubber or performance mounts: Standard rubber mounts provide better isolation for normal road use, while urethane or solid mounts reduce drivetrain movement but can transmit more noise and vibration into the car.

When Should I Replace My VW Beetle Engine Mounts?

Worn or damaged mounts can allow excessive movement of the engine and gearbox. Look out for:

Excessive drivetrain movement: Particularly noticeable when accelerating, changing gear or lifting off the throttle.
Knocking or vibration: Failed or deteriorated mounts can allow the drivetrain to move against surrounding components.
Cracked or perished rubber: Inspect rubber mounts for splitting, deterioration or separation.
Gear selection problems: Excessive gearbox movement can contribute to poor or inconsistent shifting, although linkage and gearbox faults should also be checked.
Performance upgrades: A more powerful engine may benefit from uprated mounts or additional support to reduce drivetrain movement.

Note: Stiffer isn't automatically better. Solid and urethane mounts are generally aimed at performance applications and can increase noise, vibration and harshness. For a standard road-going Beetle Cabriolet, quality rubber mounts are usually the more comfortable choice.
