Its purpose in a coil ignition circuit is to reduce the spark at the contact points as they open – minimising burning and pitting of the points and so extending their lives.
There are a number of signs that your condenser is failing and these could include static on your car radio when the engine is running, but not when it’s idle; trouble at start-up due to damaged contact points caused by excessive sparking; and a backfiring or misfiring engine.
