EMPI 36 HP Style Super Fan Shroud without Air Ducts, with non-Dog House Oil Cooler, VW Beetle 1947–1986, VW T2 Split 1950–1967, VW T2 Bay 1967–1979
This EMPI Super Fan Shroud combines the traditional appearance of a 36 HP-style VW fan shroud with a clean black finish, making it a great replacement or upgrade for compatible classic air-cooled VW engines.
This particular version is designed without heater air ducts and without a Doghouse oil-cooler arrangement, making it ideal for engines where neither the later Doghouse cooling system nor heater hose outlets are required.
Fits:
• VW Beetles built from 1947 to 1986 with 1200cc to1600cc engines,
• VW T2 Splits built from 1950 to 1967 with 1200cc to 1500cc engines,
• VW T2 Bays built from 1967 to 1979 with 1600cc engines,
• VW Karmann Ghias built from 1955 to 1974 with 1200cc to 1600cc engines,
• VW Type 181 Trekkers built from 1969 to 1979 with 1500cc or 1600cc engines.
Always check your engine specification, oil-cooler arrangement and heating setup before ordering, particularly if your VW has been fitted with a replacement, upgraded or modified engine.
Please Note: This version is specifically designed without the later Doghouse oil-cooler arrangement. If your engine already has the earlier-style, non-Doghouse oil cooler and you intend to retain that setup, this fan shroud provides the appropriate configuration.
If your engine uses a Doghouse oil cooler, you'll need one of the corresponding Doghouse Super Fan Shrouds instead.

Why should I fit an EMPI Super Fan Shroud?
The fan shroud is an essential part of an air-cooled VW engine's cooling system. Its job isn't simply to cover the fan – it helps direct cooling air around the engine to the areas where it's needed.
Extensive testing confirms that the EMPI Super Shroud delivers:
- 7% more total air flow than previous EMPI non-doghouse shrouds (w/either fan)
- 14% more cooling air CFM (cubic feet per minute) output than OE Style Shroud (w/30mm fan)
- 37% more cooling air CFM output than OE Style Shroud (w/37mm fan)
- 42% more engine cooling capacity when using a remote oil cooler and 37mm fan versus OE-style oil cooler in an OE-style shroud
A replacement fan shroud can therefore be an important part of an engine rebuild, cooling-system refresh or custom engine installation.
Installing the EMPI Super Fan Shroud:
Fitting a replacement fan shroud generally involves removing the existing shroud and installing the appropriate cooling components into the new unit. Because the fan shroud is an important part of your air-cooled VW engine's cooling system, it’s important to make sure that the cooling fan, oil cooler, engine tinware and associated seals are correctly installed. We recommend taking your classic VW to a specialist garage if you don’t have the tools, skills, or experience to complette the job yourself.
When replacing your fan shroud, it's also worth checking the condition and compatibility of your:
• Cooling fan, oil cooler and oil-cooler seals,
• Alternator or generator mounting hardware,
• Fan belt,
• Engine cooling tinware,
• Engine-bay seals,
• Thermostat and cooling-flap components, where fitted.
The key thing is to match the shroud to your engine's Doghouse/non-Doghouse oil-cooler configuration and whether your installation requires heater air ducts.
Please note: This is the without air ducts / without Doghouse version. Check your engine's cooling and heating configuration carefully before ordering.
