Here is the second of our in-car movies from the justbeetles.com beetle that is competing in the Historic Sports Car Club, Historic Saloons Championship for pre-1966 Touring Cars.
This was shot at the Oulton Park ‘Gold Cup’ meeting where we entered two races, one hour long, two driver ‘Tourist Trophy’ race which we entered just for fun (in the pouring rain!) and ended up 10th out of 14 finishers and secondly this 20 minute Championship race which was also great fun but ended a bit prematurely.
We ran out of time to improve the car after the Mallory Park race, so we were still left with an underpowered, heavy car with a 4th gear that was too tall. But we benefited from the fact that Oulton Park is largely 3rd gear, whereas Mallory was nearly all 4th. This meant that the car was in the powerband for more of the time which helped our straight line speed and due to be very twisty nature of the track we could use our secret weapon which (believe it or not) is the handling! We could corner faster than many of the cars and use all of the kerbs...something most of our competitors couldn’t do.
Things were looking good, but an intermittent electrical fault that started before the very first corner (keep an eye on the Rev counter) was cutting the power throughout the race and cost us a couple of places, and eventually we exited the race on lap 6, but it was fun while it lasted...hope you enjoy it.
