Timing Is Everything

Timing Is Everything!

Does your bus need its timing reset? Make your bus run correctly, cooler and more fuel efficiently by sorting it out!

There’s never been a better time to check your timing. With fuel prices nudging the stratosphere, sorting your timing will improve fuel efficiency and make your bus smoother and nicer to drive.

The procedure is not too tricky and is the same for the 1600cc engines as it is for the 1700-2000cc engines unless specified.

Invest in a decent timing light. The clamp on the timing light should be affixed over number 1 cylinder HT lead. The Positive lead should be clicked to either the positive terminal on the coil or the battery, whichever is easier, The negative clip should be affixed to a decent earthing point, the bumper irons are usually a good bet.

Start your engine and let it run until warm and until the choke has come off. (You may have to depress the accelerator pedal a few times to get the choke to release.

Using a 10mm socket on an extension bar, loosen the distributor clamp, set the dial on the timing light to the specs in your workshop manual, aim the timing light at the bottom pulley and then pull the trigger. The strobe light on the gun will make the bottom pulley appear as if it’s stationary. (it isn’t, so don’t touch it!)

Slowly rotate the distributor until the notch on the bottom pulley aligns with the centreline split on the crankcase (1600cc) or the timing scale (1700-2000cc).

Finally, retighten the distributor clamp, turn off the engine and remove the timing light and drive off into the sunset. Check each time you service your bus and you’re well on the way to a sweet idling, efficient motor. Sorted!
