It's Hard to turn on the TV or pick up the morning paper without screaming headlines about rising fuel prices and spiralling carbon footprints. Us Camper owners however, can breathe a little easier than most. Camping here in the UK is one of the most cost effective and eco-friendly holidays you can take.
Think about it for a minute. Whilst last minute package deals may be attractively priced, they contain a hidden cost in terms of hundreds of tons of CO2 emissions each year. The average flight emits 12-15 tons of CO2, even on a short haul from the UK to the south of Spain. Firing up your VW, even for an epic voyage across our fair Isle won't be a fraction of that.
Keeping your van in tip-top condition helps even further. Not only keeping to the service schedule and ensuring that timing, plug gaps and filters etc are all spot-on, but little things like carefully loading your roof rack and checking tyre pressures can have a dramatic effect on fuel consumption.
Whilst us Brits don't quite get the weather enjoyed by our European counterparts, a well planned trip, with the right equipment can still be a fantastic holiday, and besides, too much sun isn't all that good for you either! Most of the UK's campsites boast stunning facilities and with 'hook-up' pitches around the £15 a night mark, it should leave plenty of budget left for a bit of holiday spending and enjoying yourself.
So instead of clicking onto a Travel Agents site and jetting off to some far-flung clime, try booking one of the hundreds of fantastic UK campsites. You'll be looking after the local economy, your wallet - and most importantly of all, the environment.
