Vans going missing in Bristol

Postby divingbelle » Mon Jan 25, 2010 11:17 am

Saturday morning at about 11 am I looked out of my window to find my van being loaded on to a tow truck. On running screaming out of the house, I was told that the "owner" had met the truck driver and handed him a set of keys which opened the drivers door (old locks!) and told him it was an MOT faliure and to take it for scrap.
The truck driver paid him £100, broke the steering lock off (failed to query the duvet, portaloo and other camping paraphernalia) and set about loading it on to his truck.
If I had been out, or not curious about the noise in the street, I would have lost my van.
The truck driver also had a red Mercedes van next on his list from the same guy, but that van had already disappeared by the time the police got there.
Don't let those vans out of your sight...and make sure you have new door locks!

He must have been bullshitting right?
OK, I'll just take this van (with all the stuff in) without any paper work because some bloke said I could...
Hope you got all his details and reported the scum.

This is a lot more common than you think.

TGB (theiving gypsy b***ard) drives around looking for unattended vehicles which are easy to nick, AND come up with a semi-viable excuse for.
Crashed damaged cars a favourite, those that have been recovered to the keepers address. They load them up and take them to the nearest scrap yard who which a few of them will have an "arrangement" with.
Theft gets reported and if on the off chance the Po-Po spot the stolen vehicle on hte back of the truck and make a stop they give the "the owner/insurance company asked me to take it to the scrap yard for them.

The key thing is, if it's disguised as a recovery truck, not many folk will bat an eyelid.

Secure your vehicles folks

We've had a couple of dodgy blokes driving around this weekend.
Strange really, as we're in a cul-de-sac off a road that's not a through route.
A neighbour who's a traffic cop checked the index, and the registration doesn't exist. :o

Yes, did it as we were speaking, quite handy having an unmarked motorway car as a company vehicle.
All the other neighbours have been told the bus is not being moved anywhere.
