Dynamo no longer dynamic? Upgrade and replace it with our comprehensive, alternator conversion kit. It comprises a 55 amp Hella alternator; alternator stand; alternator backing plate; fuel pump with pushrod; V-belt and Accelerator Pump Setting Plate. This kit will fit VW Beetles 1960 on VW T2 Split from 1960 to 1967 VW T2 Bay 1600cc models 1967 to 1979 We believe it to be the only kit on the market that includes the required fuel pump and pushrod along with the correct carb accelerator pump setting plate. This plate is used on your carb to clear the larger body od the alternator. The cheaper kits on the market do not include these required parts. This kit is supplied with a Hella alternators as opposed to cheaper copies.

Great kitInstallation of the alternator is the exact opposite of the removal which is fairly straight forward, although requiring some jiggery-pokery to get the old generator/alternator out of the fan housing with the fan still attached; you will need to loosen the two bolts on either side of the fan housing as well as the rod connecting the fan housing flaps to the thermostat bellows in order to lift it enough for the fan and associated tin-ware to clear the manifold.
Wiring is straight forward, you can retain the standard three wires of the old generator/alterator (1) postive-charging wire (2) dashboard 'idiot' light (3) earthing wire. If you were using a regulator under the rear seat this can also be removed. I used the following webpages to figure out the wiring and it is very easy so don't be put off by the fact there are no instruction in the box.

I took about 6 hours to fully install the kit from start to finish, not working particular speedily so I would think that most others could do it in about the same amount of time.

Performs well but takes effort to fitPerformance is brilliant - compared to the old dynamo this unit is fantastic. Fitting was not especially straightforward - the cover-plate needed extensive fettling to make it fit without catching, some parts were not needed on my engine (fuel pump etc) and some wiring guidance would have saved a bit of time working it out for myself.

Good but requires more partsFirst thing i shall say about this is that it is a conversion kit, not a replacement kit.
You will need to utilise some old parts. For example nuts and bolts, and the oil filler cap.
However the kit itself is very good. very usable and fitting it is very straight forward. It could be improved by adding some instructions However i'm 17 with very little mechanical skills and i managed to fit it with minimal assistance from the Haynes manual.
Fitting the alternator is straight forward but complex as the engine is so compact lots has to come out and go back in.
I feel that the Kit is worthy of 5 stars as it is a conversion kit. it could be improved with instructions, fresh nuts and bolts and an oil filler cap which would add around Â£15 to the price.
All in all i am happy with the kit and would recommend it as it includes the fuel pump and push rod.
And on a separate note i must commend JK on there customer service. 2 burly blokes in a 4X4 brought this to me in the harsh weather (we had a foot of snow). That's commitment to customer service.
